You will need at least a Single Engine Land rating. It is very highly recommended that you take transition training with a Thorp aircraft experienced CFI. The Thorp S-18 is an exceptionally fun and responsive aircraft to fly. There are a number of owners that are former fighter pilots that fly the aircraft because of the view from the cockpit and the feel of the controls.
The weight limit varies depending on the aircraft, your personal choices for engine and propeller, avionics, and fuel. Gross weight for a Thorp S-18 is 1600lbs and empty weight comes in between 950-1000lbs. Contact us for more information.
We have many parts needed to build a Thorp available for you to purchase. We are currently developing all the files necessary to produce matched hole kits on CNC routers and mills. This will allow us to scale production of the Thorp S-18 well beyond past availability of kits.
The Thorp T-18 and S-18 variants have been being built since 1963. In addition to assistance from Thorp Aircraft as the kit manufacturer, there are builders and owners that were children when their father built a Thorp that have gone on to be pilots and builders themselves. There are many other highly experienced Thorp builders and owners out there that are more than happy to share their knowledge.
On Facebook there is a private Thorp T-18/S-18 group with builders, owners, and just lovers of the Thorp aircraft that are highly active. There is also a community forum at http://www.t18.net.
Yes, the Thorp S-18 all-metal kit plane can be configured either as a taildragger or tricycle gear aircraft.
The Thorp S-18 and the Thorp T-18 use Lycoming engines as powerplants. You can use an O-290, O-320, O-360, IO-320, or IO-360. Fixed pitch and constant speed propellers are used throughout the fleet.
In the future, Thorp Aircraft will be looking into alternative power plants to give our builders and owners even more choice.
